Key Events:
- 1948 – Israel is created and the war of Independence (catastrophe) is fought
1956 – The Suez crisis occurs President Nasser of Egypt emerges as an Arab hero.
1964 – The PLO is established
1967 – The six day war is an overwhelming victory for the Israelis and it ends with the capture of the Occupied Territories
1973 – The Yom Kippur War, a surprise attack by the Eqyptians, failed however, yet another Israeli victory.
1979 – The camp David Peace Treaty between Israel and Egypt, which becomes the first Arab state to recognize Israel.
1982 – The Israelis invade Lebanon to wipe out the PLO bases there.
1987 – The Intifada (uprising) begins in the occupied territories
1991- The Gulf War. A coalition of countries led by the USA defeats Saddam Hussein of Iraq
1993 – The Oslo Accords, the first Peace Agreement between Israel + Palestine.
1994 – The Israel / Jordan Peace treaty
1995 – Yitzhak Rabin is assassinated
1996 – The election of Nefanyahu slows down peace talks
